The Gray Ceiling

It's been a long time
since I looked at the sky
and saw countless stars.

I live under the gray
ceiling of our progress
blocking the light of all
but the brightest stars
closing the window to infinity
the window to reality
trapping us in the lie
of our self-importance.

Countless stars reveal
a different perspective
that makes clear how small
we are in the vast universe
where reality should be met
with wonder and awe.

Under the gray ceiling
without the stars
we embrace arrogance
and power, the consequences
of our false perspective
when reality is hidden
from us, when countless
stars shine without us,
and smallness looks large.
