The best book to read on July 4 is Carl Becker's classic study The Declaration of Independence: a Study in the History of Political Ideas. Becker follows the changes as drafts developed (why mention of slavery was dropped, for example) and presents an essential understanding of our roots. I was fortunate to study this as a college freshman at Cal Tech, where humanities classes were first rate.
