UConn women ...

... are great for bball! They are incredible to watch, I am awed by them more than by any men's team, they play the way men used to play before the giants took over and changed the game. Precision, relentless energy -- when's the last time you saw a player dive for the ball with a 30 pt lead? They are a TEAM. They play bball the way it should be played, the way men might play it again if you raised the basket a foot or two. I wish they would. Dunks are bullshit.

to win grants and awards

that finally has come to an end

2
I have vivid memories of being naked
in the presence of beautiful naked women
to the mutal satisfaction of all
but recently have begun to doubt
the veracity of my memory
since I find no concrete evidence
not a photo, not a momento
in any of various family albums
that such encounters actually happened

3
I have a vague feeling that I'm waiting
around for something or someone
who will explain to me the point
of all this spare time on my hands
now that I'm just another forgotten

who once upon a time had purpose

to wonder what in hell is going on

Fragments

Summer, 1971, was a breakthrough moment in my literary career. The Literary Review published my short story "Fragments Before the Fall," (http://www.ibiblio.org/cdeemer/frag.htm), validating me as an artist more than anything I had published earlier. This story had a unique birth.

I had dropped out of a PhD program (Amer Lit, Melville) at the Univ of Oregon in the summer of 1967 in order "to become a writer." With my new lover, I moved to Portland and began the effort. I was focusing in two directions: to publish in literary magazines I admired, particularly those with international audiences (Prism International, The Literary Review); to publish in Northwest Magazine, a Sunday newspaper supplement and the best local paying market. I accomplished both goals and returned to grad school on an MFA program.

But it was a struggle. I was receiving rejection slips like crazy because I was writing and submitting like crazy. One afternoon in particular summarized this effort: I opened the mailbox to find four returned stories, two of them from The Literary Review. This was the last straw.

I vividly remember my reaction. I rushed inside and tossed the envelopes across the room. I sat down at my manual Remington typewriter and started typing. Some 30 or 40 minutes later I had something called "Fragments Before the Fall." I immediately drove to the post office and mailed it to The Literary Review.

It took them almost a year to accept it and over a year later to publish it, by which time I was back in grad school. This story, born of frustration and arrogance, is still the closest I've come to writing a "writer's manifesto."

All this comes to mind because this morning the title Fragments After the Fall entered my head: a final statement in fragments, a bookend to close my career, which can be open ended, ending when it's over.

Hmm.

"LOSERS

Bernie Sanders, the Democratic nominee: Look, Sanders still hasn't broken out of the mold of winning only heavily white states. He's won seven states, and all six of them rank among the 18 whitest states in the country. That's not good enough to win the Democratic nomination -- especially considering the most populous states have more black voters. Clinton's massive margins of victory among black voters and huge delegate prizes in such states, combined with her massive lead among superdelegates, quite simply mean Sanders can't keep relying so heavily on white voters; it's just not good enough. Sanders won some states tonight, but he didn't little to change the underlying reality that he remains a distinct underdog who needs something to change."

Public education

From the Chronicle:

UC Berkeley has been reclassifying master's degrees from "academic" to "professional" in a little-noticed drive that lets the university charge more for the programs - doubling or tripling the price, in some cases - while officially maintaining a tuition freeze across the University of California. University records examined by The Chronicle show that in the past five years, UC Berkeley has reclassified 20 master's degrees at nine graduate schools, collecting millions of dollars more from students despite the tuition freeze that has been in place for California residents...
