I only took one semester of Classical Greek at UCLA, and I only did it because the idiotic administration didn't accept my Russian linguist military service as satisfying the undergrad language requirement. Absurd!
A blessing in disguise, it turns out.
Only 10 in the class, and I became the star. The prof took special interest in me, trying to get me to become a classics major. They were desperate, I think.
The prof also was national president of Phi Beta Kappa: she got me in, one year after I graduated, despite not having a qualifying GPA (I took 24 and 27 credits a term, "catching up" in humanities by taking a couple of courses for exposure, getting P or C. At same time, I was in highly competitive English Honors Program.)
For only one term with her, this prof became influential on my future. Quite remarkable. I think of her, studying Greek tragedy today.
