The Shrinking Universe
The older I get, the less I find
in American culture that engages me.
Fewer books, less music,
damn little that even interests me
at theaters and concert halls
stadiums and galleries
in books, films, performances
on TV, radio, the internet.
No wonder I'm returning
to the classics
Homer and Aeschylus
Dos Passos and Melville
literature before it aimed
at the lowest common denominator
literature before its purpose
was to make money
back in the day when humans
expressed fewer opinions
but had more freedom
and strived for more understanding
before the evolution of
our dominate new form
Homo consumerus
