Life Is A Crapshoot
stepping into the February morning
in Portland hours before sunrise
taking the dog out to pee
I am struck by how mild it is
the moon beautiful in the west
it could be a morning in Spring
and I think of the hundreds of thousands
from Georgia to Maine
hammered by a winter storm
snow and sleet and ice
cities and airports shut down
countless homes without power
spring in the west
misery in the east
and that's life for you
in a zero sum universe
opposite extremes existing at once
and if you're in the right place
at the right time today
odds are you'll be in
the wrong place tomorrow
