Sanity

Buttermilk bread waiting to go into oven ... new batch of rye brewing ... fresh iced coffee at hand ... good jazz, a musical sound track for sanity ... a sense of progress, slow but sure, on jazz ukulele ... feeling like the Best Ignored Writer in America ... which actually has certain advantages, compared to my years in the sun ... about as good as it gets on a dying planet.

Commission, Oregon Public Broadcasting, to write teleplay on Sen. Wayne Morse. Never produced. Becomes one-man play, American Gadfly, produced in 2004, then tours.

Publish seminal essay What Is Hypertext? on Internet. Translated into several languages, establishes online reputation.

Electronic Playwright-in-residence, Prisma, Santiago, Chile, resulting in The Last Song of Violeta Parra, a one-act hyperdrama.

Publish second influential essay on Internet, The New Hyperdrama, later anthologized in Theatre in Cyberspace (1999).
